Positioned approximately 5 miles south-west of Nairn, Cawdor Castle sprang forth around a robust 15th-century tower house. Initially, it was the stronghold of Clan Cawdor, before transitioning to the Campbell family’s possession in the 16th century.
Though renowned for its supposed connection to Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the actual 11th-century incidents that inspired the play occurred several centuries prior to the castle’s construction. Nevertheless, the castle carries its own mysterious story tied to its creation.
Legend has it that the castle’s foundations encircle a thorn tree, later revealed to be holly dating back to 1372. Curious visitors can still observe this ancient tree in the dungeon today.
